Choices and Responsibilities

Recently reading The Spicy View‘s take on soldiers in Iraq blogging I was reminded of a lecture my father gave me when i was a young boy.  My dad explained to me that throughout life you will have to make choices and with every choice comes a certain responsibility.  This was as simple with choosing to play football you have to practice or choosing to make a sandwich you have to clean up after yourself.

Unfortunately not all of life’s choices offer responsibilities as simple as those listed above, though the message remains clear.  When Daniel Goetz chose to blog from Iraq he was fully aware of his responsibilities as a soldier, he even did much to abide by the Army code of conduct.  Unfortunately the Army determined Goetz was outside of his rights as a soldier and his blog ceased.  There was even a reaffirmation posted on his blog citing Goetz firm belief in his mission, his leaders and his country.  If this post was in fact forced I don’t know, although I do find it nonsensical to force a soldier fighting in a war to reaffirm his beliefs.  Goetz is fighting; he obviously is part of the team regardless of derisive comments made on his blog.

We do know Goetz made a choice in joining the Army, there has not been a draft in my lifetime, and with that choice comes responsibilities.  We also know that the Army and the US government has made many foolish decisions and the action to remove a soldiers blog may have been another one.
